With financial support from the European Union, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is investing €1.8 million in Ukraine to modernise geological data management. The second phase of the project will digitise a large portion of geological information and significantly upgrade the State Geological Portal. Geoinform of Ukraine and the EBRD have signed an agreement to launch this phase, which includes developing IT infrastructure, creating an English-language interface, and producing interactive maps.
The Director General of the Ukrainian Geological Survey (UGS), Oleh Hotsynets, emphasised that digitising geological information is a key step toward transparent and investment-attractive subsoil use. Interactive access via the State Geological Portal makes the sector open, understandable, and competitive
The project, implemented over 30 months in two phases, will scan and digitise 60,000 geological data units. The first phase, completed under a six-month agreement signed in July 2023, digitised 6,000 volumes covering 125 strategically important subsoil sites. The pilot phase received high praise from European partners, and Ukraine was recognised by the EBRD for developing its critical raw materials market.
This initiative is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to modernise the geological sector, strengthen digital infrastructure, and ensure transparent and sustainable subsoil management with support from international partners.
