Ukraine Learns from Denmark on Groundwater Management

04 November 2025

A Ukrainian delegation visited Denmark from 26 October to 1 November 2025 to study groundwater protection, sustainable water supply, and resource management. Organised with support from the Danish Embassy in Ukraine, the delegation included representatives from the

Ukrainian Geological Survey (UGS), SRDE “Geoinform of Ukraine”, the Ukrainian Geological Company, and other institutions.

The Director General of UGS, Oleh Hotsynets, highlighted Ukraine’s ongoing integration of European best practices despite martial law, noting that Danish experience will help harmonise Ukrainian legislation with EU groundwater directives.

During the visit, participants explored Denmark’s national groundwater monitoring programme, regulatory frameworks, and stakeholder roles, and took part in technical discussions with the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS). Field visits to local water utilities demonstrated practical measures for protecting groundwater, which Ukraine plans to adapt to local conditions.

Ukrainian representatives praised Denmark’s technical expertise and agreed with their hosts on next steps for implementing the Action Plan and maintaining an ongoing expert dialogue.
