The Ukrainian Geological Survey (UGS) and the Geological Survey of Canada have signed a cooperation agreement to develop research, modernize geological data, and attract investment to Ukraine’s mineral sector. The agreement was signed under the framework of the Ukraine–Canada Security Cooperation Agreement, specifically its “Economic Cooperation” chapter, concluded on 24 February 2024.
The Director General of the UGS, Oleh Hotsynets, highlighted that the signing of this agreement is an important step toward integrating Ukraine into the global geological community. We aim not only to enhance scientific research but also to create transparent conditions for investment in strategic resource extraction. Cooperation with Canada will facilitate the adoption of best international practices and open new opportunities for the development of Ukraine’s geological sector,” said
The agreement establishes a Ukrainian–Canadian Minerals Coordinating Committee, which will serve as the main platform for joint initiatives, experience exchange, and coordination of scientific research. The cooperation program is planned for two years.
Key objectives include:
- Supporting the discovery of new deposits through joint research, data analysis, and increasing the investment attractiveness of Ukraine’s mineral sector;
- Attracting strategic investors by promoting research results to international partners;
- Modernizing geological data through digitization, systematization, and translation of key geological reports into English;
- Driving digital transformation of the sector, including the creation of an electronic archive of geological maps and metadata.
Additionally, the parties will explore joint geological research, including deposits of critical raw materials of strategic importance to both Ukraine and Canada.
The agreement underscores the close partnership between Ukraine and Canada and demonstrates Ukraine’s strategic commitment to sustainable development, modernization of the geological sector, and expanding international scientific cooperation.
